What it can feel like
- Low back or neck pain that is worse when sitting, bending or coughing
- Pain, numbness or tingling travelling into the buttock and leg, or the shoulder and arm
- Stiffness in the morning that eases with gentle movement
- Weakness in the leg or arm in some cases
Common causes
Repeated bending and lifting, long periods of sitting, an awkward movement and normal age-related wear can all contribute. Often there is no single cause.
How we help
We confirm which level of the spine is involved through examination, and review MRI or X-ray reports if you have them. Care may combine gentle adjustments chosen to suit disc problems, soft-tissue work, targeted exercises and, where suitable, computer-controlled spinal decompression.
If we find signs that you need a specialist or scan first, we will refer you.
How long recovery takes
Disc problems usually settle gradually over several weeks. Most people notice their pain becoming less frequent and less intense before it fully settles. We set clear checkpoints so you can see progress.
Your first visit
Your first consultation takes about 25 to 30 minutes and costs $180 before GST. We listen to your history, examine you, explain what we find and what we recommend, and you decide whether to start care. No referral is needed, and insurance claims are supported.
When to see a doctor urgently
Please see a medical doctor or go to A&E (or call 995 in an emergency) if you have:
- Loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness around the groin or inner thighs
- Weakness that is getting worse, such as foot drop
- Severe pain after a fall or accident
Frequently asked questions
Will I need surgery for a slipped disc?
Most disc problems are managed without surgery. Surgery is usually considered when there is serious or worsening nerve weakness, or when careful non-surgical care has not helped.
Can a slipped disc heal?
Disc bulges and herniations often shrink and become less painful over time. Care aims to reduce pain, protect the area and restore movement while that happens.
Is chiropractic safe for a herniated disc?
When it is assessed properly and treatment is adapted to your disc, chiropractic care is a common non-surgical option. We use gentle techniques and decompression where suitable, and refer if needed.
