Numbness and tingling

Pins and needles, numbness or a "dead" feeling in the arms, hands, legs or feet often come from an irritated nerve in the neck or lower back, or from a nerve being squeezed further along its path.

What it can feel like

  • Tingling or numbness in the fingers, hand or arm, often with neck or shoulder pain
  • Pins and needles in the leg or foot, often with lower back or buttock pain
  • Symptoms that change with posture, such as sitting, looking down at a phone or sleeping on one side
  • A weaker grip or a heavy feeling in the leg

Common causes

Nerves can be irritated where they leave the spine (for example by a disc or narrowing) or along the way, such as at the wrist (carpal tunnel) or elbow. Posture and repetitive work often contribute. Some medical conditions, such as diabetes or vitamin B12 deficiency, can also cause numbness, which is why a full assessment matters.

How we help

We map where the symptoms are and test sensation, strength and reflexes to find where the nerve is affected. Care may include gentle adjustments, soft-tissue work, nerve-gliding exercises and workstation advice. If your symptoms suggest a medical cause, we will refer you to your doctor.

How long recovery takes

Nerves recover more slowly than muscles. Many people notice the tingling becoming less frequent over several weeks.

Your first visit

Your first consultation takes about 25 to 30 minutes and costs $180 before GST. We listen to your history, examine you, explain what we find and what we recommend, and you decide whether to start care. No referral is needed, and insurance claims are supported.

When to see a doctor urgently

Please see a medical doctor or go to A&E (or call 995 in an emergency) if you have:

  • Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side, or trouble speaking (call 995)
  • Numbness around the groin or loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Rapidly worsening weakness

Frequently asked questions

Is tingling in my hands from my neck?

It can be. A pinched nerve in the neck often causes tingling into the hand, but so can carpal tunnel at the wrist. Testing tells them apart.

Can bad posture cause numbness?

Yes. Long periods with the head forward or the elbows bent can irritate nerves. Small changes to your set-up often help.

When should I see a doctor instead?

If numbness came on suddenly, affects one side of the body, or comes with other symptoms such as trouble speaking, seek emergency care immediately.
