What it can feel like
- Pain at the side of the hip, especially when lying on that side
- Pain at the back of the pelvis or in the buttock
- Groin pain or stiffness when putting on shoes and socks
- Pain when walking, climbing stairs or standing from a chair
Common causes
Sacroiliac joint irritation, tendon problems at the side of the hip, tight hip muscles, wear in the hip joint, and changes during and after pregnancy.
How we help
We work out whether the pain comes from the hip, pelvis or spine, then use gentle adjustments, soft-tissue work and targeted strengthening for the hip and core muscles. We also advise on sitting, sleeping and activity.
How long recovery takes
Many people improve over several weeks. Tendon problems can take longer and respond best to gradual strengthening.
Your first visit
Your first consultation takes about 25 to 30 minutes and costs $180 before GST. We listen to your history, examine you, explain what we find and what we recommend, and you decide whether to start care. No referral is needed, and insurance claims are supported.
When to see a doctor urgently
Please see a medical doctor or go to A&E (or call 995 in an emergency) if you have:
- Hip pain after a fall, especially in older adults
- Being unable to put weight on the leg
- Hip pain with fever or a hot, swollen joint
Frequently asked questions

It can be. The lower back can refer pain into the hip and buttock. Testing helps tell the difference.
Can pregnancy cause pelvic pain?
Yes. Pelvic girdle pain is common in pregnancy. See our pregnancy and post-natal care page for how we help.
What exercises help hip pain?
It depends on the cause, but strengthening the buttock and core muscles helps many people. We will show you the right ones.
