Signs to look out for
- One shoulder or hip higher than the other
- A shoulder blade that sticks out more on one side
- The body leaning to one side, or uneven gaps between the arms and waist
- A rib hump when bending forward
Common causes
In most children and teens the cause is unknown (idiopathic scoliosis). In adults, scoliosis can come from wear in the spinal joints and discs. A leg-length difference or muscle imbalance can also cause a functional curve.
How we help
We check the curve, posture and movement, and use X-rays where appropriate to measure and monitor it. Care focuses on easing pain and stiffness, improving mobility and strength, and teaching exercises to support the spine.
Chiropractic care does not replace monitoring by a specialist for growing children with larger curves. We work alongside your child's doctor and refer when bracing or a specialist opinion is needed.
What to expect
For adults, the aim is less pain and better function. For children and teens, regular checks during growth spurts are important, and we will explain what to watch for at home.
Your first visit
Your first consultation takes about 25 to 30 minutes and costs $180 before GST. We listen to your history, examine you, explain what we find and what we recommend, and you decide whether to start care. No referral is needed, and insurance claims are supported.
When to see a doctor urgently
Please see a medical doctor or go to A&E (or call 995 in an emergency) if you have:
- A curve that seems to be getting worse quickly during a growth spurt
- Back pain with numbness, weakness or bladder changes
- Night pain or pain with fever or weight loss
Frequently asked questions
Can chiropractic straighten scoliosis?
Chiropractic care is not a proven way to permanently straighten a structural curve. It can help with pain, stiffness and movement, and we monitor the curve and refer when needed.
At what age should children be checked?
Scoliosis often shows during growth spurts around 10 to 15 years old. If you notice uneven shoulders or hips, it is worth an assessment.
Is scoliosis painful in adults?
It can be, especially when it is linked to wear in the spine. Many adults find gentle care and exercise help them stay active.
